Yoga mats: thickness, materials, grip... the no-nonsense guide

Decide in 30 seconds

Choose your ideal mat according to your practice:

  • Sweating + dynamic flow (vinyasa/hot) : high grip with natural rubber or cork+rubber, 3–4 mm.
  • Comfort/relax/Yin : choose 6–8 mm (TPE, foam cork).
  • Travel : 2–3 mm TPE/rubber folding mat.
  • Eco & low odor : choose certified cork or TPE.

Comparative subjects

Natural rubber : exceptional grip, dense, slightly heavier, acceptable initial odor, durable.

Cork : antibacterial, grip that improves with humidity, natural feel.

TPE : lightweight, good cushioning, good value for money.

PVC : entry-level, durable but less ecological.

Thickness & Use

  • 2–3 mm : mobility, travel.
  • 4–5 mm : versatile.
  • 6–8 mm : comfort for knees and hips.

Tip : For sensitive wrists, choose 5–6 mm with support.

Size, weight & texture

  • Length : your height + 10–15 cm.
  • Width : 61 cm standard, 66–70 cm for broad shoulders.
  • Texture : micro-grains for dry grip, smooth surface for fluid transitions.

Maintenance & lifespan

Clean with warm water and neutral soap, avoiding solvents. Dry flat in the shade.

Avoid the heat of the car trunk and direct sunlight.

Store your rug unrolled or rolled outward to avoid corners rising.

FAQ

What should I choose if I sweat a lot? Natural rubber or cork+rubber, 3–4 mm, with a microfiber/towel if necessary.

Does a thick mat slip more? It cushions better but may be less stable; material grip takes precedence over thickness.

How to remove the smell at first? Ventilate for 24–48 hours, clean lightly, and dry in the shade.
